Cerclage Wire

Cerclage Wire Instruments

gSource cerclage wire is manufactured from high quality German surgical stainless steel in the form of a very flexible wire in the shape of a ring or loop. It stabilizes fragments in a fractured bone and is especially useful for transverse irregular or short oblique fractures. Cerclage wire may be useful in uniting the fragments when the bone is shattered. It may also be used in an osteotomy, a surgical procedure to realign or remove a segment of the bone. Internal fixation devices such as cerclage wire must not be reused. Cerclage wire is intended for single use only.

Compression in Fractured Bones

Depending on the fracture type, bones require various medical instruments and methods to ensure proper healing. Keeping the bone stable and in one place is an essential basic requirement for any fracture. To do this, surgeons require compression, which can be from the muscles and ligaments around the bone or through surgical interventions.

These interventions are necessary when distractive forces pull the bone fragments apart at the fracture site. Tendons, ligaments and muscles can still be attached to bone fragments, causing them to pull apart.

How Cerclage Wire Helps

Surgeons use cerclage wire to provide compression to help with bone union. The surgeon must reconstruct the fracture so the wire stays tight around the bone. Doctors often use this wire with Steinmann pins and K-wires, which help stabilize fractures like oblique diaphyseal fractures under 45 degrees — in which a full cerclage may fail because of the angle causing slippage.

Doctors enjoy great success using these wires in long bone fractures, such as in the femur, and supplementing them with other instruments like plates, pins and K-wires. This technique is advantageous because it requires minimal soft tissue dissection, helping with infection control and other complications that can arise from large-scale tissue dissection.
